How to Compress JPEG Images for Social Media (Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook)

Platform-by-Platform Image Specs

Instagram

  • Square post: 1080 × 1080 px
  • Portrait post: 1080 × 1350 px
  • Landscape post: 1080 × 566 px
  • Story / Reel: 1080 × 1920 px
  • Recommended max file size: 8 MB (Instagram will further compress anyway)
  • Sweet-spot quality: 75–80% JPEG to prevent Instagram's re-compression artifacts

Instagram re-encodes every image at upload. If you send a high-quality JPEG, their algorithm has more data to work with and the result looks better. Aim for 1080 px wide and ≥ 75% quality.

WhatsApp

  • Recommended dimension: Up to 1600 px on the longest edge
  • Max file size: 16 MB (but WhatsApp will compress anything above ~100 KB)
  • Sweet-spot quality: 80–85% so WhatsApp's compression doesn't degrade it further

WhatsApp aggressively recompresses shared images. Sending a lightly pre-compressed JPEG (around 200–400 KB) results in better final quality than sending a 3 MB original.

Facebook

  • Post image: 1080 × 1080 px or 1200 × 630 px (link preview)
  • Cover photo: 851 × 315 px
  • Recommended quality: 80–85%

Facebook uses its own compression pipeline. Images uploaded as PNG are sometimes treated better than JPEG. For product or event photos, use 80–85% JPEG with JPEGMinify to avoid double-compression artefacts.

X (Twitter)

  • In-stream image: 1200 × 675 px (16:9)
  • Max file size: 5 MB for JPEG/PNG
  • Recommended quality: 85%

X displays images at lower resolution in the timeline and full resolution on click. Compressing to 85% quality at 1200 px wide hits the sweet spot between quality and upload speed.

LinkedIn

  • Post image: 1200 × 627 px
  • Profile / cover photo: 1584 × 396 px
  • Recommended quality: 80%
